Abstract:
From 1967 to 1978 a series of three separate rescue excavations and observations was conducted on an area of some 5.7ha south-west of the defended area of Roman Towcester. The metalled road was set out between side ditches towards the end of the 1st century AD. About 170AD a series of ditched plots was laid out along both sides of the road, on a different alignment to earlier fields. Buildings of timber or of cob on stone foundations were erected within the plots. There was much activity, including iron working, until c.230AD, when there appears to have been a marked fall-off in the intensity of occupation. Around 270AD a new road was created, which joined the Alchester road. About 330AD a new set of ditched enclosures was laid out, with buildings erected inside the plots. Industrial activity in this area included iron and lead working. The report includes much detail and illustration of the pottery assemblage and other finds.
