Abstract:

Small scale excavations adjacent to White Hart Lane, Soham revealed a fairly dense sequence of Iron Age, Roman and Late Anglo-Saxon occupation remains, representing a continuation of an area of settlement and activity previously identified at the former Church Hall site directly to the south. Although features predominantly dated to the Late Iron Age and Early Roman periods, a significant discovery was a large pit containing a notable assemblage of Early Iron Age pottery and animal bone. Viewed within the context of other nearby investigations, a picture is beginning to emerge which suggests that the Soham peninsula, and the historic core of the town in particular, was the focus of extensive activity during the Early Iron Age.
