Abstract:		 Excavations ahead of a housing development in the Cambridgeshire village of Cheveley, near Newmarket, found evidence for a medieval smithy occupied in the 12th and early 13th centuries and built at what was then the edge of the village. Analysis of the distribution of the various types of waste deposited around the site allowed for the identification of different processes and activities being undertaken in different areas. Dating for an apparent hiatus in activity in the mid-12th century suggests a link with the De Mandeville rebellion of 1143–4 when the area was purportedly laid waste.
