Abstract: |
Charts the technological and social history of animal-powered transport from the earliest evidence, derived from the Late Neolithic in Switzerland and Mesopotamia, to the anachronistic modern use of carriages for ceremonial purposes. This study covers extremely diverse aspects of the subject, including the changing perceptions of prestige associated with various modes of transport, links between chariotry and the Indo-European speaking peoples, horse-riding as a stimulus to changing fashions of male clothing in classical and early medieval times, and the fact that the standard British railway gauge is based on a standard axle-width of ox-carts which has changed only slightly since prehistoric times. |
