Abstract:
Although evidence is drawn from the Castros Culture of Portugal, the main aim of this study is to evaluate the social role of warfare and its effects on a culture dominated by hillforts, from its emergence at the end of the Late Bronze Age, until its demise at the end of the Augustan-Flavian period. This has been achieved by collating and re-evaluating the evidence from a very disparate range of sources, including those of the archaeological record and the classical authors. Supplementary data were obtained from excavations, fieldwork and environmental analyses at several `castros'.
