Abstract: |
A street by street gazetteer of the historic buildings of the city, preceded by chapters on various topics. The general history of `The city of Armagh' (xi-xiv) is outlined by D R M Weatherup while the history of `Armagh's old cathedral' (1--4) is described by G O Simms. The resumption of Catholic archiepiscopal building following the 1829 Emancipation is discussed by Damian Wood in `Archbishops involved in building works on St Patrick's Roman Catholic cathedral' (5--8). Hugh Dixon describes the contribution of `Architects in Armagh before 1900' (9--14). One of Armagh's important public buildings is discussed in `Fifty years ago: the Market House -- now the Technical School' (15--18) by Henry McAvinchey. John Butler considers `The architecture of Armagh Observatory' (19--26) in the context of other early western European examples. The sources and properties of local building materials are described by Philip S Doughty in `The stones of Armagh' (27--32). Armagh's statutory listed buildings are noted (211--14) and there is also an illustrated guide to some architectural terms (216--17). |
