Abstract: |
A reappraisal of the Iron Age Glastonbury Lake Village, Somerset, begins with a history and critical analysis of previous excavations. The ninety individual mound structures and associated finds are considered, followed by an analysis and phasing of the structural elements of the site. Richard Brunning (117-20) describes the joinery and structural carpentry. The environment of the site and its locality is presented by Rupert Housley (121-36). Some finds from the site are considered, particularly those indicating on-site activity including `Ferrous and non-ferrous metalworking' by Catherine Mortimer & David Starley (138-43), `Bone and antler working' by Tina Tuohy (143-9), `A reconsideration of the glass: some archaeological and technological aspects' by Julian Henderson (155-60), and `Stone' by Fiona Roe (161-7). A report on the human remains is by Geraldine Barber, Rebecca Wiggins & Juliet Rogers (170-4). The concluding sections are on early reconsiderations and provisional models and a discussion of village life. |
