Abstract: |
An account of the city of York, beginning with an overview of the historical, antiquarian and archaeological sources. Chapter two puts York into its geographical context and deals with the development of the settlement from earliest times to the present day. Chapter three examines the evidence for the different peoples who have lived in York, and subsequent chapters discuss the urban environment, how the inhabitants earned a living, and the evidence for religion and for belief in the supernatural during the city's development. There is a brief guide to what to see when visiting York. |
