Abstract: |
The history and development of Stirling Castle as a royal palace and fortress from the twelfth century to the present day. The castle played a key role in the wars with England, was a royal residence of the later Stewart monarchs and was again of strategic importance in the Jacobite uprisings of 1715 and 1745. The castle is now in the care of Historic Scotland. Fortifications on the site earlier than the twelfth century are discussed in chapter one, while the final chapter gives an overview of notable buildings in the vicinity. |
