Abstract:
The fourth Whithorn Lecture suggests that other early medieval carvings in south-west Scotland, from Minnigaff (Kirkcudbrightshire) and Wamphray (Dumfriesshire), of late seventh- or early eighth-century date, and Kilmorie (Wigtownshire), of the tenth century, would repay the type of close scrutiny hitherto lavished on the important cross at Ruthwell (Dumfriesshire). These stone crosses need to be understood as polychrome objects, whose ornament deliberately imitated metalwork; they should be seen as giant versions of the elaborate altar and processional crosses of the early medieval church.
