Abstract: |
An analysis based on charred remains of cereals and associated weeds. In addition to archaeobotanical data collected by previous studies, assemblages were studied by the author from two sites, Abingdon, a late Iron Age oppidum and Worton Rectory Farm, Yarnton a small Iron Age and Roman farmstead. Archaeobotany is integrated with palaeo-environmental, settlement, and artefactual evidence. Ethnographic and historical data are combined with social theory to provide interpretive contexts for patterns in the data. A detailed consideration of the possible ecological interactions between crops, weeds and anthropogenic influences is undertaken to understand past agricultural systems. |
