Abstract: |
The volume sets out three interrelated aims for the future of London Archaeology: realising the potential of the London Archaeological Archive; managing the archaeological resource more effectively; and facilitating better focused archaeological research. The information and proposals presented are the fruits of an extensive consultation involving individuals and organisations interested in the archaeology of London, who are listed in an appendix. It briefly outlines the character of both the buried and recorded archaeological resource, then presents the common-usage chronological periods for London, with reference to current knowledge and emergent research questions and priorities. The review of research priorities is also considered through five major research themes -- topography and landscape; development; economy; people and society; and continuity and change. Finally, the report considers ways of moving towards a research strategy for London, describing initiatives in research and archive access and looking at how a research culture can be developed. Further appendices summarise major research themes and set out strategic objectives. Includes French and German summaries. |
