Abstract: |
A report of work begun by Richmond in the 1950s and continued by the present author brings together everything known about the Roman town. Chapter I deals with the nature and siting of Aquae Sulis; II with the temple of Sulis Minerva, which is entirely classical in style and proportion and thus unusual in Britain; it was set in a large complex which included the baths and another monumental building (?theatre). Chapter III deals with the baths, IV with the monumental buildings adjacent to them. Other religious sites within the settlement are noted in Chapter V, and Roman sites excavated elsewhere in Bath during 1963-67 are described in VI. The remaining two chapters treat the inscribed and carved stone and provide a gazetteer of Roman sites - structural remains and burials - in and around Bath. Specialist reports treat burials, gemstones, a brooch, pewter, and deposits recovered from the baths which reflect environmental conditions at the time of submersion of the buildings under marsh. |
