Abstract: |
The catalogue deals with early Irish monasteries (c 5th to c 11th centuries), with the cathedrals, and then with the houses of the various orders. These are followed by the hospitals and hospices, secular colleges, and unclassified sites (those of unknown or doubtful order). Details of location, founder, status and important events in the history of each site are given, with references to original documents or later printed sources. An introductory chapter traces the origins and development of Irish monasteries, and each order is described individually. The early ecclesiastical sites are listed in the appendix, and a copy of the Dublin Ordance Survey map of monastic sites is provided. |
