Abstract: |
It is now possible to build a tentative framework of Christian events in Britain from 5th to 8th centuries using only archaeological, architectural and art historical evidence, but Britain cannot be studied in isolation from Ireland. Archaeological evidence for a diocesan stage is scanty, but much more survives from the monastic phase (6th century onwards). Monastic enclosures and imported pottery are discussed. A treatment of "Cemeteries and Chapels" embraces cist graves, re-used pre-Christian cemeteries, special treatment of individual graves, and circular enclosures. The concepts of "undeveloped" and "developed" graveyards are explained and Latin and Celtic words for church and graveyard reviewed. Archaeological evidence for the cult of relics includes slab and corner-post shrines and portable reliquaries. A chapter on altars discusses leachta, excavated altars and fragments, and portable examples. A final chapter on the relevance of literary sources concentrates on the value and importance of Saints' Lives (Northumbrian Lives are listed in an appendix). There is a long bibliography and numerous illustrations. A H |
