Abstract: |
Although one quarter of the City's area has already been destroyed in archaeological terms, and over a half at least partially damaged, many of the major outstanding problems could be solved if an unprecedented effort were made to tackle the problem now. Chapters of the text treat the history of archaeological research in the City, the current state of knowledge of Roman, Anglo-Saxon and medieval London, the survival of the evidence, the problems requiring solution, and the shape of a unit to tackle them on the right scale. Appendices provide a schedule of the sites to be developed within the next five years, sources for the maps, and a select bibliography. A base map and seven transparent overlay maps can be combined in various ways to show the extent of archaeological knowledge and the possibilities for its advancement. See also abstract 74/2385. |
