Abstract: |
The report of a committee formed out of concern for the recovery of East Anglia's past surveys an area some seventy miles square, outstanding in both the quality and the quantity of its evidence for the human past in Britain. However, the fertility of the region has meant that hardly any ancient sites remain visible above ground, and continuing destruction renders the provision of sufficient qualified staff for fieldwork of all kinds a matter of urgency. A Norfolk Archaeological Unit is already in being and it is hoped that a similar unit for Suffolk will soon be launched. The report summarises what is already known of East Anglian archaeology and indicates the most urgent research problems. |
