[SX 9292]. Preliminary account of 1st-18th century deposits. At least three phases of massive, probably military, timber buildings represent the period AD 50-80; in 2nd century a timber house of some pretensions was fairly soon replaced by shacks. Two massive stone houses followed in 3rd century, but were dilapidated early in 4th, and farming within the city walls is evident. Medieval pits of 11th-13th century yielded much pottery and organic remains including leather; the street grid belongs to this period. Pits also provide most of the evidence for 13th-15th centuries, while in 16th the area was largely industrial (leather, metal, glass, potting) and a series of ?vine-trenches was dug. The 17th-18th centuries are represented by more pits. Important finds include a 1st century marble head and a silver spoon of AD 1680.
