Discusses a quantified approach to distribution maps, point-pattern analysis, some models for settlement patterns, distribution of single artefact types, association between distributions, relationship between sites and other features; and in conclusion considers general problems and the value and relevance of such studies. Visual comparison of distribution maps is no longer enough, and statistical means of comparison must be used. Moreover the relationships between different types of artefacts, and between them and such things as soils or landscape features, are also productive of new insights. A further need is for the collection of large bodies of reliable data of all kinds. |
