Abstract: |
(The Jarrow Lecture for 1978). The two David portraits in the Durham Cathedral MS BII 30 have attributes which are appropriate to Christ: they are Christological in a manner analogous to the Cassiodoran psalm-commentary which they illustrate. Analysis of the artist's technique shows the use of dry-point gridding and ruling, compasses and templates. Though the book was attributed to Bede in the late medieval period the animal ornament suggests a mid-8th century date. Art-historical and palaeographical arguments point to its production in a Northumbrian scriptorium but there is no conclusive proof that it was a Jarrow work. Au-contributed |
