Abstract: |
The first report on W H Manning's excavations on the legionary fortress deals with the fine wares (assignable to the Neronian period without Claudian intermixtures). Colour coated, 'eggshell' and lead glazed wares were coming from Central and South Gaul, the Lower Rhineland, Baetica and Italy. Of the 'Gallo-Belgic' wares, terra nigra and 'Pompeian red' (but not terra rubra) were reaching Usk. For each of the wares the fabric, form, decoration, origins, and distribution (both Continental and British) are set out. The report thus provides a framework for examining wares from the major industries represented in Britain. |
