Abstract:
Recent research has shown how much more information can be gained from sculptures of the period between about 876 and 1100. In particular the symbolism of the stones demonstrates a considerable interaction between pagan myths and early medieval Christian beliefs; progress is being made on understanding the political and cultural groupings of N England; and the work of itinerant sculptors on the one hand and large metropolitan workshops on the other is being identified, in some cases by the recognition of the use of templates in sculpted work.
