Early prehistory is treated by S Piggott (text substantially of 1971-2, with 1975 additions), covering the climate, plants, animals, and humans before c 4000 BC and then the first agrarian societies after that date. P J Fowler covers the later prehistoric period (text of 1975 with some later additions to the bibliography) explaining the recent considerable access in knowledge and understanding of the 2nd and 1st millennia BC. Livestock over the whole prehistoric period is treated by M L Ryder (text of 1970). |
