Abstract: |
Gives an account of the development of Pal and Quaternary studies in Britain over a century and a half; describes the Pleistocene sequence in Britain and allots tentative dating to the named stages; uses the N Kent sites as a basic sequence, extending it with the earlier sites of Westbury-sub-Mendip and Kent's Cavern, assigning the term Middle Acheulian to the Swanscombe handaxe industries, and identifying a 'Final Acheulian/Micoquian'; discusses the distribution of sites, the status of the Clactonian, the question of variation, the occurrence of Levalloisian technique; the Middle Palaeolithic and MTA; and in a concluding chapter considers the problem of function and the possibility that most Pal sites in Britain represent summer hunting visits from winter bases in W Continental Europe. |
