A virtual data bank of facts about Anglo-Saxon England, expressed in map or graph form with supporting text. The Background section covers geology, climate, coastlines and rivers, forest cover, Domesday Book settlement, regional bias in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, density of archaeological study, etc. A section on Events deals with Bede to the Wessex Kingdoms, Viking and Scandinavian activity, graves, place-names, Mercia, etc. Under Administration come Offa's Dyke, the Hidages, the early regnal itineraries, landholding at 1066 etc. In Economy are treated the minerals, salt, lime, agriculture, roads, coins, mints, towns; and finally the Church section covers dioceses, missionaries, the monastic revival, and bishops. |
