Abstract: |
The British frontiers are placed within the context of the Roman empire before an examination is made of the northern tribes. Consideration is then given in turn to Agricola on the Forth-Clyde isthmus, the 'Gask frontier', Hadrian's Wall, and the Antonine wall. A chapter follows on the frontier after the abandonment of the Antonine Wall, and finally the various themes of the book are drawn together. Roman and native material is interwoven throughout.
