Abstract: |
With at least 10 000 traditional farmsteads surviving, a pilot project was established to record some of them. Processes of documentary research and field survey/recording are described and the buildings of the farm examined - plans, construction, materials - nearly 300 farms being covered in a year. The work confirmed that model farms, and the proliferation of farm buildings, both dated from after c 1780, though the 'Norfolk system' had originated much earlier than that and bullock-yards for manure collection only began rather later. Variation between areas was much less than expected. Information packs are being produced and the project continues. |
