Abstract: |
Examines the core-periphery effects from 600 BC through to about AD 400, starting with the Greek colonies 600-400 BC, penetration of the southern shores of Gaul, Roman estates and entrepreneurs, continuity and change in Gaul 125-59 BC (including the British periphery), the battle for Gaul, the creation of the three Gauls, the progress through Britain, and conditions beyond the Rhine. The theme throughout is the interdependence of barbarian Europe and the Mediterranean. (For review, see J J Wilkes, Times Lit Suppl, 22 July 1988.) |
