Abstract: |
The case for waterfront archaeology is set out with reference to results already achieved in Europe and in Britain and Ireland. York's special advantages and status are then outlined, with some brief indications of the location and nature of the Roman, Anglian, Anglo-Scandinavian, medieval, and post-medieval waterfronts of the city. The Ouse and Foss waterfronts are under threat from various developments, and a programme of rescue and research is set out for which large sums will be required. |
