Abstract: |
Advances in animal bone research over the last thirty years prompted this fresh look at a crucial site. Some re-identifications have been made and conditions of recovery assessed for their effect on the total assemblage. The site is an offshore dump, not the primary residential area. Antlers are mainly imports to the site, and the theory of summer migrations cannot be sustained: late spring to midsummer seems to be the season of occupation. Roe deer were mostly killed at one year old, red deer at three years. Age and sex dimorphism are considered and meat estimates revised downwards. The site compares best with camps of caribou-hunting Eskimo rather than with kill sites or base camps. |
