Abstract: |
Rejecting the traditional historical perspective, this analysis concentrates on the use of archaeological evidence for rural settlement to produce and assess ideas about the organization of RB families and communities. These were probably Celtic rather than 'Roman' and are examined through their houses, compounds, settlements, and settlement groupings. Differences of wealth and poverty from region to region are examined in the light of apparent relations within and between family and community groups. In areas without villas, farmers may have preferred to conceal their wealth in hoards, or show it in other ways than by villa-building. Concepts of 'local centre' (roadside settlement of over 10ha) are explored and 'girdle-pattern' settlements are interpreted in social terms. |
