Abstract: |
In default of literary sources for a narrative history the activities of the legion in the north have to be examined under the heads of fighting, building, living, and dying. Some reasoned calculations can be made for strength of the legion, but there is good information for much of its building activity on both Walls, and it was clearly working at full strength on the Antonine. It also helped build Carpow fort. Units from the legion were probably stationed at Auchendavy, perhaps at Castlecary, and other groups are attested from time to time in outposts. Officers are attested in several places in 3rd century, and more building was undertaken, together with metalworking. Caerleon remained as something of an anachronism while many of its men were posted northwards for years. |
