Abstract: |
The Norman castle, built in the 1070s, was occupied for two centuries. It was not a second-rate building, even though of timber, but a permanent substantial fortification with impressive accommodation. It was rebuilt, always in timber and clay, several times. A reconstruction drawing showing a full and crowded bailey of mid-12th century date is discussed. |
