Abstract: |
The site of Agricola's famous battle has long intrigued historians and antiquarians, some 15 sites having been suggested over the years. Relevant questions are: who and where were the Caledonians, what was the nature of Iron Age settlement, which are the Agricolan marching camps, how did the battle progress? Previous attempts at locating Mons Graupius are recounted and four of the more recent archaeological essays are examined (Raedykes, Pass of Grange, Duncrub, and Bennachie). No certain candidate can be named, so happily the quest can continue, and Agricola's achievement be respected. |
