Abstract: |
The 1989 Jarrow Lecture assesses the site evidence for Christianity in Orkney and Shetland in Norse and pre-Norse times, with particular reference to Birsay and the Brough of Deerness in Orkney and St Ninian's Isle and Papil in Shetland. Excavations have failed to confirm the existence of monasteries in either period, though church-sites are plentiful, and the question of local church organization remains open. A R |
