Abstract: |
First in a new series, The archaeology of medieval Britain, this book is a synthesis of results from the main excavations done from 1945 onwards. Part 1 deals with castle defences (earth and timber works, masonry keeps, gateways, mural towers, barbicans and bridges); Part 2 with the domestic aspects (halls, lodgings, kitchens and allied structures, chapels, ancillaries, and water supply, and the archaeological evidence for castle construction and castle life). A third part deals with town defences, and the fourth is on the decline of the castle, ending with some ideas for future research. |
