Popular guide treats pre-Norman Pontefract, the Norman Conquest, the Honour and lords of Pontefract, development of the castle from 12th/13th century onwards, (motte-and-bailey, trefoil keep, gatehouse, etc), castle life, the Civil War sieges, and post-Civil War developments including the growing of liquorice. The excavations of 1982-6 examined the Constable Tower, the Norman and Elizabethan chapels, the service buildings (kitchen, brewhouse/bakehouse) of l5th century, and part of the curtain wall.
