Abstract: |
Excavations established that the churchyard was a focus in 5th-7th centuries for intensive burial activity, including (in Mound C) at least two complex mound graves of a type not previously known. Long-cist graves close to these high-status burials may represent retainers or family. The enclosure of this area needs more study. Mediterranean contacts of some kind are suggested by inscribed slates, compassmarked stones, and amphora fragments. Exploration of an undisturbed Early Christian ground surface is planned, as is further work on the early med and med history of the churchyard. |
