Abstract: |
The emphasis in this description of ten years' archaeological research in a valley in Derbyshire's White Peak is on the spirit of place and the deciphering of the 'expressive and memorable' history book that is the Roystone landscape. The area is laid out as a history trail which attracts large numbers of visitors. The chapters describe the unravelling of periods in the field walls, the evolution of Roystone from prehistoric phases to Roman cash-cropping farm to med grange and shrunken village and on to hill farm and industrial works (including a brick works). The valley is now conserved as a historic landscape. |
