Abstract: |
A new approach, covering a wide cultural and chronological span, to the interpretation of the deposition of fine objects that were often buried in hoards or deposited in watery locations such as rivers or bogs. It is suggested that the character of the deposits changes from one period to another, and that there are striking regional variations between different parts of Europe. This is revealed by considerations of the changing significance of the axe in the Neolithic and Early BA, the interplay between grave goods, votive deposits and hoards in the BA, and the renewed river deposition of weaponry in the IA. An attempt is made to relate these changes to the broader processes taking place in prehistoric society and to bring together the study of artefacts and social archaeology. M H |
