Abstract: |
The main volume contains harvest data 1989 and further figures for the experiments with grain storage in underground silos. Two phases of the project to study sherd movement in the ploughsoil are reported and a full bibliography of Butser Ancient Farm publications is provided. Anthony G Hamlin contributes two papers, 'Primitive firing technology' (pp 1-16), considering the theory of firing, the technological capabilities, and a technological chronology for firing; and 'The lead route to bronze' (17-31), finding it 'difficult to escape the conclusion that it was lead that opened the way to the economic production of substantial quantities of a technically useful metal', bringing in the Bronze Age and considerably postponing the Iron Age. The subsidiary volume gives the weather records for the four climatological stations controlled by the Ancient Farm. The Year Books for 1986 and 1988 are also available at £8.50 by post each. Reports on the Experimental Earthworks at Wroughton and at Fishbourne (vols 1-4 of each) are available at £7.50 plus postage. |
