Abstract: |
Large-scale rescue excavation at the site of the deserted med hamlet revealed occupation from Neolithic times onwards. A Neo-BA ritual complex of monuments included a long mound, long enclosure, two barrows; other monuments are nearby. Early Saxon occupation was represented by a sunken-featured building. A presumed Saxo-Norman manorial complex followed, with gradual replacement in stone from 12th century. Three successive watermills were examined. By mid-13th century the manor was replaced by a hamlet with a series of stone-built tenements, all but one having malting kilns. Desertion, perhaps due to flooding, occurred between 1400 and 1500. A large quantity of finds is undergoing processing, during which dating is expected to be refined. |
