Abstract: |
The excavations form a part of the Origin of Villages Study, described by P Livitt with a gazetteer of known Roman to med sites and finds in the Walderton to North Marden area. The two AS cemeteries at Apple Down, Compton, W Sussex were first located by responsible metal-detector owners, and were excavated over six seasons. A total of 282 cremations and inhumations were recorded; many more had not survived. The earlier cemetery runs late 5th to late 7th century; the later one, late 7th to early 8th, may be early Christian and ancestral to the hamlet at Up Marden lkm away. Notable were thirty-one four- and five-post timber structures which appear to be houses of the dead for several generations of one family. Some crouched inhumations may indicate the survival of native British burial customs. Specialist reports on glass beads, Roman and prehistoric pottery, AS pottery stamps, AS textile remains, and skeletons, plus an EBA cremation. |
