Reconsiders the evidence from the three forts in relation to current knowledge of the Dover establishment. Richborough's importance at the end of Roman rule reflects its status as port of exit; Reculver (which the Roman fleet helped to build?) was abandoned by the time of Richborough's recrudescence. Literary evidence for contacts between the churches is considered, together with the use of formulae in inscriptions.

Argues that a castle design involved four independent decisions: accommodation, defensibility, form, and embellishment. Four case studies of 14th century buildings (Okehampton, Middleham and Old Wardour castles, plus Dartington Hall) demonstrate that each had (in addition to one major suite of rooms), groups of one- or two-roomed lodgings for different numbers of guests of varied social standing, like a modern hotel. TR 273679. Excavation of the church revealed by air photography established a sequence of five phases from 10th century to late 15th, ruination by 1630.

Preliminary report on excavations on the service wing, hall, solar undercroft, and chapel; three main structural phases, 1175, 1220, and late 14th century.

A number of medieval settlements in claylands have revealed evidence of a lightly constructed building formed of earthfast posts packed round with clay. The technique is easier and cheaper than cob walling and the buildings are reasonably durable while maintained, though leave only postholes eventually. Implications for roofing are considered.

Interim summary of work on indents, which has allowed (from outlines and letter forms) the identification of the main London workshops and some smaller provincial groups. Surviving examples seem likely to number 1000.
