Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was carried out on an eroded stretch of coastline as part of the Northumberland Coastal Strategy. This was to be subsequently stabilised and consolidated. The post medieval fort was recorded and soil samples were also taken for environmental analysis. Initial results of this showed the assemblage dominated by processed rye grains - very unusual in a British context but commonplace for Scandinavia and possibly indicative of previously unknown Scandinavian occupation on this part of the island.
