Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposals for developments. The report concluded that the site had certainly been occupied by an earlier building (Elstree Hall). There was no medieval or pre-medieval occupation evidence known from the site. However, a building pre-dating Elstree Hall was a distinct possibility. The proximity of tile and pottery production and other settlement evidence was reflected in its designation as an Area of Archaeological Significance. One of the curiosities of the site was the close proximity of two high status buildings. It was difficult to explain this though it was possible further research might through some light on this matter. It was clear that there were three areas of priority in terms of the evaluation: the site of the demolished wing of Schopwick Place, the area of the proposed swimming pool and the former site of Elstree Hall.
