Abstract: |
The assessment established that the Watering Island was constructed in the 1790s from within the Mast and Timber Pounds. The island housed the rigging house and the sail loft, which were essential requirements of a sailing navy. These buildings were erected in the 18th century and survived intact until 1926 when they were destroyed by fire. The great dockyared expansion of 1851 doubled the size of the dockyard. Included in this expansion was the building of a series of wooden jetties along the western wharfs and frontages. In the 1930s concrete jetties replaced the wooden jetties.[Au(abr)] |
