Abstract:
A single trial trench was excavated prior to proposed residential development. An unstratified struck flint was the earliest find. A number of ditches and pits were found, the latest of which was of 19th century date, but others were thought to have been medieval. At some stage the southern part of the trench had been used as a cemetery; the north wall ran across the middle of the trench. Deep pits, possibly cut for sand extraction, did not contain human bone but pottery dated them to the later 18th century. The site had then been levelled up with spoil, which contained large amounts of disarticulated human bone and some lead coffin fragments. The amount of human remains present suggests that only skulls were removed for further interment. This new level then became a cleared cemetery and was used between c.1800 and 1850 for further graves and contained articulated skeletons and traces of wooden coffins. Assuming some degree of disturbance, up to 100 burials might have survived on the site, but in less disturbed areas, up to 200 burials might be expected. [Au(abr)]
