Abstract: |
Test-pits excavated by contractors were cleaned, extended and recorded by archaeologists, and further recording was carried out during the excavation of two trenches and during level reduction, during works associated with the replacement of a subway with a wider and deeper structure. An earlier desk-based assessment had identified the site as a potential area of archaeological preservation; it was anticipated that evidence for both of the Town Ditches would be destroyed by the construction work. An evaluation had failed to locate the two Ditches. However, during the excavations, a linear feature presumed to have represented the inner Town Ditch was located. The upper fills of this feature had been cut by a second, smaller ditch. Observation of excavations for the diversion of a gas main resulted in the identification of the south side of a further ditch, presumed to have been the outer ditch. This contained late medieval and post-medieval pottery. Several further features were also recorded, including two probable pits containing late medieval pottery, and one which contained late Saxon pottery. [AIP] |
