Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in relation to the proposed development of the site. The site did not contain any SAMs or Listed Buildings but did lie within an Archaeological Priority Zone. There were numerous entries in the GLSMR within a 250m radius of the site, the majority of which related to the Roman settlement of Southwark. Historical maps revealed that the site had been built upon by the mid-18th century and prior to this, in the medieval and Saxon periods, the site had been a marshy parkland, possibly dating back to the Roman withdrawal from the area. However, the greatest degree of archaeological significance lay in the Roman period. The site was located on the periphery boundaries of the Roman settlement in Southwark and, as recent excavations on the adjacent site 97-101 Union Street had shown, it was possible that a Roman cemetery extended across into the site. Previous developments, in the form of basements, may have had an impact upon archaeology, but this would not be clear until some form of investigation had taken place. Given the amount of confirmed archaeological activity in the immediate area and the fact that the site lay within an Archaeological Priority Area, it was likely that the proposed development may have an impact on the underlying archaeological resource.
